Bodiam Castle: the one that looks like a child drew it, in a good way
The outside is one of the best castle views in England. The inside is a ruin you'll walk in twenty minutes. Know that going in and you'll leave happy.
Why it's worth it
It's the platonic castle. Four round towers, a proper moat, lily pads, ducks. Every castle you drew aged six was secretly Bodiam. The walk from the car park delivers the view all at once, and it genuinely stops people mid-sentence.
The grounds carry the visit. You pay to get in, there's no free grounds-only ticket, but the circuit of the moat with a flask of tea is a proper visit on its own. You don't have to climb the keep to feel you've seen Bodiam.
Climb the towers. The spiral stairs are original, uneven, and the view over the Rother valley from the top is the second-best thing here.
Why it might not be
It's a shell. The interior was gutted centuries ago. No furnished rooms, no armour, no tapestries. If your kids expect Hogwarts inside, manage that in the car.
Coach parties from 11am. Come July, we've watched three coaches arrive within twenty minutes of each other. The moat path gets slow, the photo spots get queued.
£13 to £15 is steep for a shell unless you're National Trust members (free) or you treat the grounds as the main event, which you should.
The practical bit
About 1h30 from south London on a good run, up to 1h45 in traffic, A21 then lanes. Car park is £5 for non-members, gravel, 300m walk. Fills by 11:30 on weekends, another reason to be early.
Honestly? Awkward. Robertsbridge mainline, then a taxi you'll need to pre-book, or the Kent and East Sussex heritage steam line, which has a station right by the castle, slow but lovely.
Arrive 9:30 to 10:00. Moat circuit, bridge, towers, scone, gone by 12:30. Pair it with Rye (25 min away) for a full day.
