Box Hill: a five-star view for almost no effort, on the right day
A proper big view over the Weald to the South Downs for barely any walking, plus a good café and plenty to extend into a day. It all rests on the weather, on a hazy Sunday you've queued to park for a view you could half-see from the road.
Why it's worth it
Huge view, tiny walk. The Salomons viewpoint is a few hundred flat metres from the car park, and on a clear day you're looking twenty-five miles across the Weald to the Downs. That ratio of reward to effort is rare.
There's a proper day here. Add the stepping stones over the River Mole, the Happy Valley loop and the woods, and a viewpoint becomes a walk. The Zig Zag Road below is a cyclists' pilgrimage.
The café is genuinely good. A real National Trust café, toilets and a shop right at the top. Small thing, big difference on a cold morning.
Why it might not be
Haze kills it. On a hot, still summer day the far Downs simply vanish and you're left with the nearer green. The view you came for needs clear air.
It's a honeypot. On a fine weekend the car parks fill, the viewpoint's busy and the road is a river of cyclists. Not the wild hilltop some expect.
You pay to park free to walk, but the National Trust car parks are pay-and-display unless you're a member, and they fill early on sunny days.
The practical bit
About forty-five minutes to an hour from London, M25 to Junction 9 then the A24. National Trust parking is pay-and-display, free for members, and fills on sunny weekends, so arrive before ten.
Genuinely doable. Box Hill and Westhumble station is a walk across the stepping stones and up, or Dorking is nearby. One of the better car-free viewpoints.
An hour for the view and café, half a day if you walk the stepping stones and valley. Go early on a clear day. Pair with Denbies Wine Estate at the foot of the hill.
