Castle Combe: the prettiest village in England, and a one-hour visit
Genuinely, almost implausibly beautiful, and genuinely tiny. It's one lovely street, a bridge and a church, an honest hour's visit at the end of a two-hour drive. Go early, or pair it with a Cotswold walk, or it tips into a trap.
Why it's worth it
The photos don't lie. Honey-coloured cottages, no wires, no signs, the Bybrook bridge and the market cross. It really is as perfect as everyone says, and standing in it beats any picture.
It's free, and car-free inside. Nothing to pay to see it, and the village keeps cars out, so it stays quiet and unspoilt in a way most honeypots don't.
It's a lovely walking base. A popular six-mile circular starts right here through the Cotswold valleys. That, not the village itself, is what justifies the drive.
Why it might not be
You'll run out of village. This is the classic look-at-it-for-an-hour-and-leave. There's one street, a church and a bridge, and beyond photographs there's very little to do.
It's two hours away. The furthest day out on this blog, the best part of two hours on the M4. A long way to go for an hour on your feet unless you build a walk or another stop around it.
The car park is tiny and fills you park up top and walk down, and on weekends and bank holidays the one small car park fills early with essentially no fallback. Arrive early or turn back.
The practical bit
The best part of two hours from London on the M4, Junction 17 or 18, then the B4039. You cannot park in the village, use the visitor car park at the top, around four pounds, then a ten-minute walk down and back up.
Not really. No station in the village, and the nearest towns need a taxi or bus onward. This is a car trip.
Go early, before the day-trippers and while the car park's empty. The village itself is an hour, so pair it with the Castle Combe circular walk, Lacock or Bath to make the drive worth it.
