RHS Wisley: the safest garden bet near London, if you pre-book
The RHS flagship is the most reliable all-rounder near London, something in bloom in every season and endless variety for a family. Book online, arrive early, and beat the Junction 10 traffic and the car-park scrum.
Why it's worth it
Something is always out. Two hundred-odd acres with the great Glasshouse, the Rock Garden, the long mixed borders, Battleston Hill's rhododendrons and the science gardens at Hilltop. Come in any month and there's a reason to be here.
It's a proper family day. Room to roam, play areas, a huge plant centre and good food. Kids and grandparents both do fine here, which isn't true of every garden.
Free parking, close to town. Fifteen miles from south-west London with a big free car park. For a flagship garden, that's about as easy as it gets.
Why it might not be
The gate price is steep. Twenty pounds fifty on the day. Book online or arrive car-free and it drops a lot, but turn up cold and it's dear for a garden.
The J10 traffic is real. The A3 at M25 Junction 10 is a notorious pinch point, and on a sunny weekend the car park fills by midday. Early or nothing.
It's big and it gets busy a lot of walking, and at peak it can feel more retail-park-busy than tranquil. Weekday mornings are a different, calmer place.
The practical bit
About fifteen miles from south-west London, just off the A3 below M25 Junction 10, the pinch point that decides your journey. Big free car park, over a thousand spaces, but it fills on fine weekends. Arrive early.
Doable car-free for the discount. West Byfleet or Woking are a few miles out, with a bus (not Sundays) or a Woking shuttle on some days. Car-free visitors pay the reduced rate.
Open daily, weekends from 9, weekdays from 10. Half a day to a full one. Pair with Box Hill or Painshill Park nearby.
